According to what you would have learned if you had inquired around, either through Google or your SEO-savvy friends and coworkers, there are two types of Google Knowledge Panels: one for local businesses and another for brands. While this was the case in the past, it is no longer the case. There is just one type of knowledge panel, and that is the brand panel. In addition to the standard search results, Google My Business, a service for local companies, is displayed to searchers as a panel-like block adjacent to the search results.

While they may appear to be the same, they are in fact very different.

Specifically, we’ll be concentrating on the one and only approved knowledge panel type, which is focused on people, places, and things.

Only Google knows exactly what is included within the Information Graph, but it is feasible to assist it in its endeavors and have some of that knowledge work for you.

It’s simple: just perform a Google search for your name or your company’s brand. In the event that you do not already have a knowledge panel, there are actions you may take to obtain one, but none of them are guaranteed to be successful.

First Things First: The Shortcut to Claiming a Knowledge Panel

How do you know you’re a verified owner in Google Search Console?

After clicking the checkmark, you should see a message that says “You are a confirmed owner,” which should appear immediately to the left of the checkmark.

Google will give you with a range of alternatives to upgrade your access level to verified if you currently only have “Delegated Owner” status or below (“Full” or “Restricted” access), as described above. What information will I need?

Your identity or that you are an authorized representative of your company is essential for Google to recognize you. The importance of this is equal for you and Google — they want to have the most up-to-date information available, and you want to be able to have a role in what information is displayed about you on Google. You’ll need to provide Google with evidence that you are who you claim to be in order to do this. Even if you are claiming the knowledge panel on behalf of your company, you will be required to supply a name.

  1. The homepage of your firm is a fantastic place to start.
  2. The method by which Google requires you to demonstrate that you have access to certain social media accounts and web page modifications is fairly low-tech — you just log into those accounts and capture pictures of your successful sign-in.
  3. As part of the application process, you will be required to submit an official document that demonstrates to Google that you are the proper person to claim the knowledge panel.
  4. A photo of yourself holding any type of photo identification, with any sensitive information covered up or blacked out, will be the final item you’ll require.

Once this procedure is complete, it may take a few days for Google to notify you that you have access to your Google Account by sending an email to the address associated with your Google Account. Congratulations!

How to Claim Your Google Personal Knowledge Panel

What do Tim Tebow, Sarah Palin, Robert Redford, and you all have in common, you might wonder? You have not yet claimed your Google personal knowledge panel, which is a great shame. Although I’m not sure about you, I’m not convinced that the other three have put in the effort to get ownership of an important (but free) piece of Google real estate as of this writing. (A knowledge panel is automatically generated by Bing Search as well, but we’ll concentrate on Google.) Don’t be disappointed if your personalized knowledge panel does not appear. According to Google’s algorithm, the vast majority of individuals have not yet given one a rating. The process of optimization is divided into two stages. First and foremost, double-check that Google has your information accurately (refer back to the Rod Collins case above). What Is a Google Knowledge Panel and How To Get One

Have you ever watched a movie and immediately went to Google to look for additional information about the actor who played the lead role? You notice a panel on the right-hand side of the SERP that has a brief biography of the performer, as well as extra links and resources? That’s what I’m talking about. That’s what a knowledge panel looks like. Where Do Knowledge Panels Come From?

When Google’s algorithm is certain that it has ‘comprehended’ a fact and believes that the knowledge will be useful to the user, the search engine displays a Knowledge Panel. As previously stated, the information displayed on the screen is derived from a variety of sources. Wikipedia and Wikidata are two of the most well-known instances of crowd-sourced information. But there are many others, such as Crunchbase, LinkedIn, Facebook, Zoominfo, WordLift, and many more. The information Google collects is sorted and categorised, and if Google believes the information to be correct, it is put in its Knowledge Graph, which is accessible to everyone.

  • For most Google users, it’s now standard practice to see a knowledge panel when conducting a brand search.
  • As a result, when someone searches for your brand name on Google, the search engine must display a knowledge panel that appropriately reflects your organization.

  • You don’t want to take any chances with your life.

Step 1. Identify the entity home

Determine the location of what I refer to as the ‘entity home.’ In Google’s opinion, this is the webpage where the entity may be found ‘living’. This is the place to go for information about the organization. It can be any page, as long as it is solely dedicated to the company’s products and services. Pages that cover numerous entities should never be used as the home page for a single entity. The option: if you execute steps two and three, you have the option of choose which page Google considers to be the entity home.

Google prefers it if it is on a website that you own.

This is because you want to maintain the homepage as visually appealing as possible for users, and you’ll understand why this can be in contradiction with that goal when you read step two.

Number Two: Without an entity home under your direct control, your knowledge panel will always be sluggish, prone to mistakes, and at risk of disappearing (see below).

Step 2. Set out the facts

To make Google comprehend the facts you want Google to know about your entity, write a concise description that includes numerous parts (one for each component) and headers that are useful and factual. Each section should have a single heading that is helpful and factual. Utilize Organization markup to transmit the same information in Google’s ‘native language,’ which is HTML. Nothing more than repeating what you’ve said on the website in a manner that Google can understand natively.

Step 3. Corroborate

Step two’s markup should include connections to articles about your firm that are written by sources that Google is likely to see as reliable. Nothing more than identifying them and, to the greatest extent feasible, updating all of the facts and information on those sites so that they support what you state on the entity’s main page is required. Try to use the same (or a very similar) description on each one, if at all feasible. “But that’s duplicate material, and duplicate content is bad,” says one of the most typical rebuttals.

  • If your firm has a Wikipedia page, it will very probably result in the appearance of a knowledge panel for your company.

  2. Nonetheless, Not all businesses ‘deserve’ to be included on Wikipedia, and many are turned down, resulting in time spent there being wasted
  3. If you are successful in getting that piece published on Wikipedia and your approach is entirely focused on Wikipedia, you are on shaky footing. It is virtually guaranteed that the knowledge panel will disappear if the Wiki administrators remove the page during the first year of its existence. Your company’s facts are being handed over to a third-party website that you do not control, and if the information is incorrect, you will have a problem on your hands. If you have a Wikipedia article, the first sentence of the description that Google uses on your knowledge panel will be the one from that article. You have made it highly visible to your viewers and presented it as trustworthy information – the hazards are immediately clear. Google will use a description from another site that it trusts if there is no Wikipedia page available.

My author profile on Search Engine Journal has been copied and pasted here, which I can change myself. Don’t rely on either Wikipedia or Wikidata for your information. In and of themselves, they are insufficient to establish a reliable knowledge panel, and each has hazards. Having your post or item removed sends a very bad signal to Google, which will penalize you severely. I’ve been able to create well over 100 knowledge panels without the need of either Wiki or wiki software. They are stable and solid, and (most importantly) I have a high degree of control over them.

  • Within a few days of publishing a Wikipedia article, within a few weeks of publishing a well-constructed Wikidata item, and within a few months of not having either Wiki.
  • A strong knowledge panel gathers information from a variety of sources (such as the Google patent cited above) and has a big number of corroborating sources for that information as well.
  • The simple rule is to avoid putting all of your eggs in one (or even two or three) baskets at the same time.
  • In addition, this is your sole opportunity to exert any kind of control over the information displayed.
  • If you want to track your brand name, you may utilize Semrush by include it in your keyword tracking campaign.
  • Here’s a brief tip: This is possible with the Keyword Magic Tool, which is part of Semrush.

Option 1. Google recognizes the entity home

It is possible to claim this knowledge panel if Google has recognized your entity home (which can be seen by the globe icon on the knowledge panel) and you are the recognized owner of the domain (property) in Search Console. If this is the case, when you click on “claim this knowledge panel,” you will be prompted to log into Search Console and claim the knowledge panel. There is a relatively new option available to you (as of early 2021). Google recently included Twitter and YouTube as other methods of claiming your knowledge panel, and it occasionally (but not always) provides those as choices to claim your panel.

  1. The social channel option has never appeared to me in a situation where there is no entity home; yet, it appears that the two are intertwined.
  2. Because of this mechanism, if Google makes a mistake in determining the entity home, someone else may be able to claim your knowledge panel.
  3. You must establish both your identity and the reasons why your relationship with the entity (business, person, etc.) should entitle you to control of their information panel.
  4. You must supply your government-issued identification, a selfie with your identification, confirmation of your legal link to the organization, and screenshots of logged-in social media accounts that have been verified.

Reason 1. Knowledge Graph update

When Google changes the Knowledge Graph (learn more about it here), there is a reorganization of the material that it considers as factual, and as a result, there is a reorganization of the knowledge panels. If your entity does not have adequate corroboration, these frequent modifications to the Knowledge Graph can be extremely damaging to your entity’s reputation. Google will destroy a huge amount of Knowledge Graph articles and knowledge panels with each upgrade. At Kalicube, we keep track of these changes, and you can view the most recent ones here.

Reason 2. Lost entity home

Whatever the case, whether Google has formally acknowledged the entity home by displaying the globe icon in the knowledge panel or not, the search engine does have a “foundation” source it is relying on as a “crutch” (Wikipedia, Twitter, LinkedIn, or your website are all candidates here). If it loses that reference for whatever reason, it will frequently just remove the knowledge panel, even in the interim between the significant updates described above. Consider the following scenario: If Google depended on your Wikipedia article or Wikidata item, and that page or item was removed, you would lose access to the knowledge panel.

Alternatively, if your ‘About Us’ page is no longer visible. It might also happen if Google was relying on your Twitter account and you decided to delete it.

Reason 3. Human intervention

It appears that Google personnel will occasionally erase knowledge panels after they have been claimed by a user. So far, I’ve uncovered three possible explanations: the Google employee believes it is untrue, it is a duplicate, or it is spam. That final point, in particular, stood out to me. There is a very common thread in knowledge panels that disappear when they are claimed: the knowledge panels were triggered by what I refer to as ‘knowledge panel spam,’ which is a type of spam that targets knowledge panels.

Obviously, there are others, but the general rule is that “if you pay for anything and it is quick and easy, it is most likely spam.” Multiple opinions indicate that establishing a knowledge panel for your firm is a “must.”

  1. They help you appear credible to your target audience when they search for your brand name and find your Brand SERP. In entity-based search engine results pages (SERPs), you can appear in features such as carousels, entity boxes, and People Also Search For (perhaps on your rivals’ branded searches)
  2. Google has recognized you and your business by displaying a knowledge panel on your website. As a result, you will not be left behind in the realm of entity-based search (for more more on this, see Dave Davies’ blog post here).

If you complete the work necessary to obtain your knowledge panel in a thorough and accurate manner, you will receive the following substantial benefits:

  1. When communicating with your audience across all media, you provide an uniform brand image. Because you’ll be submitting them to all of these reputable sources, you’ll receive high-quality, relevant inbound connections to your website. You will unavoidably increase Google’s impression of your E-A-T credentials (see here for additional information)
  2. You obtain an overview of your internet reputation (you may generate an ORM report by extending the spreadsheet exercise described in this article).
