Google Knowledge Panel: What Is (& Isn’t) It? How to Claim & Update

Clicks and attention are drawn to the Google knowledge panel, which is frequently the first thing you encounter when searching for a business, brand, or notable individual on the internet. There are only two choices available to you if you work for a company that has an unclaimed knowledge panel established by Google, or if you represent a public person who has an unclaimed Knowledge Panel:

  1. Cross your fingers and hope that Google brings up the information you’re looking for
  2. Claim it and go right to the point by informing Google of the information that the web needs to know

Considering that Google can locate you and has gathered enough information about you to construct a knowledge panel, it’s likely that future clients and consumers are reading it to learn more about you as well. Frequently, they will do so before they have even visited your website or social media pages. We’ve outlined all you need to know about Google knowledge panels in the sections below. Whatever your brand or public profile, you will learn how to claim your panel and optimize it so that your best presentation is put forth on the web’s most popular place for discovery and information.

Wait a second, what is a knowledge panel?

You may not have known what it was called at the time, but you have undoubtedly used it. When you search for something on Google, you may see a block of text to the right of the standard search results. This is known as the sponsored search results. On mobile devices, the panel shows around halfway down the results list. As an example, if you were searching for information on a little firm called Microsoft, you would be presented with a panel of information indicating what Google believes you are searching for.

There can be only one

According to what you would have learned if you had inquired around, either through Google or your SEO-savvy friends and coworkers, there are two types of Google Knowledge Panels: one for local businesses and another for brands. While this was the case in the past, it is no longer the case. There is just one type of knowledge panel, and that is the brand panel. In addition to the standard search results, Google My Business, a service for local companies, is displayed to searchers as a panel-like block adjacent to the search results.

While they may appear to be the same, they are in fact very different.

Specifically, we’ll be concentrating on the one and only approved knowledge panel type, which is focused on people, places, and things.

Only Google knows exactly what is included within the Information Graph, but it is feasible to assist it in its endeavors and have some of that knowledge work for you.

It’s simple: just perform a Google search for your name or your company’s brand. In the event that you do not already have a knowledge panel, there are actions you may take to obtain one, but none of them are guaranteed to be successful.

First Things First: The Shortcut to Claiming a Knowledge Panel

Obtaining verified owner status in Google Search Console using an email address connected with the domain name associated with the knowledge panel is a time-saving strategy for claiming a knowledge panel that is critical to success. In the case when you already have this degree of access through a user account that corresponds to the website linked with the brand or person you’re claiming, all you have to do is:

  1. To claim your knowledge panel, click the “Claim this knowledge panel” button located under your knowledge panel. When the Google Search Console verification box appears, click “Confirm” to complete the process. After that, you will be taken to the Google search engine results page, where you can recommend changes to your listing.

How do you know you’re a verified owner in Google Search Console?

When determining whether or not you are the verified owner of a Google Search Console account, the procedure is rather basic.

  1. Access the Google Search Console by logging in. Select “Settings” from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen. Examine the settings for the property. After clicking the checkmark, you should see a message that says “You are a confirmed owner,” which should appear immediately to the left of the checkmark.

Google will give you with a range of alternatives to upgrade your access level to verified if you currently only have “Delegated Owner” status or below (“Full” or “Restricted” access), as described above. Google may only give you with the HTML tag or DNS verification techniques, despite the fact that we prefer the option of verification using Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager because it is the most convenient approach. Consult with your webmaster to evaluate which choice is the most appropriate for your firm when it comes to boosting your degree of accessibility.

Are you a representative for a firm, a celebrity, a media personality, or another prominent figure on behalf of your agency’s clients?

The possibility to add other delegated owners who do not have a direct link with your firm, such as agency representation, will be available to you once the panel has been claimed (screenshot below).

How do I claim a knowledge panel without a Google Search Console account?

The first step is to ensure that you have a Google Account. It’s completely free, and you’ll need one to get the most of all Google has to offer. Click on the Get Verified link in Step 2 to proceed. Choose one of the following options: “I am a person with a knowledge panel” or “I represent another person, organization, or entity (sports team, musical group, film, etc.) that is not myself” in Step 3. Step 4: Complete the form to the best of your ability and using the most up-to-date information that you have available on your computer.

What information will I need?

Your identity or that you are an authorized representative of your company is essential for Google to recognize you. The importance of this is equal for you and Google — they want to have the most up-to-date information available, and you want to be able to have a role in what information is displayed about you on Google. You’ll need to provide Google with evidence that you are who you claim to be in order to do this. Even if you are claiming the knowledge panel on behalf of your company, you will be required to supply a name.

  1. The homepage of your firm is a fantastic place to start.
  2. The method by which Google requires you to demonstrate that you have access to certain social media accounts and web page modifications is fairly low-tech — you just log into those accounts and capture pictures of your successful sign-in.
  3. As part of the application process, you will be required to submit an official document that demonstrates to Google that you are the proper person to claim the knowledge panel.
  4. A photo of yourself holding any type of photo identification, with any sensitive information covered up or blacked out, will be the final item you’ll require.

Once this procedure is complete, it may take a few days for Google to notify you that you have access to your Google Account by sending an email to the address associated with your Google Account. Congratulations!

Okay, I have my knowledge panel. What can I do with it?

This is the point at which the real fun begins! You are now free to provide Google – and anybody else who may be looking for you or your organization – with the most up-to-date information available. The chance to contextualize the aspects of your company that are most beneficial to those who are searching for you has presented itself. Those are your potential or present clients who are looking for your company or your name – they are already aware of who you are, and they are interested in learning more about what you can do to help them.

Stuff to Check

This may appear to be a straightforward item, but it is significant enough to get a mention right at the top of the list. Is the spelling of the name correct? Even if you like to refer to your company by a popular initialism or abbreviation, you’ll want to spell it out for this listing to avoid confusion. The right suffixes should be included in this case since it will be used as a person’s knowledge panel. Why not include that MD or Ph.D. after their name if they worked hard to acquire it?

Are those social media profiles right?

Google’s Knowledge Graph will pull what it believes to be your company’s social media accounts, but you may update that block to ensure that the proper profiles are displayed. This is an excellent chance to direct the attention of your audience to the exact location where you want them to view your most current social media posts.

A clickable website button

Possibly the most crucial piece on this page, and the one you must make absolutely certain is perfect — consumers will click on that button to visit your page if everything else is proper. How to Claim Your Google Personal Knowledge Panel

What do Tim Tebow, Sarah Palin, Robert Redford, and you all have in common, you might wonder? You have not yet claimed your Google personal knowledge panel, which is a great shame. Although I’m not sure about you, I’m not convinced that the other three have put in the effort to get ownership of an important (but free) piece of Google real estate as of this writing. Throughout this essay, we’ll go through some of the most commonly asked questions about Google’s personalized knowledge panel. (A knowledge panel is automatically generated by Bing Search as well, but we’ll concentrate on Google.) What the personal knowledge panel (PKP) is and why it’s essential will be discussed, as well as tips on how to identify and claim your own PKP, as well as suggestions on how to improve your PKP appearance online.

To claim this knowledge panel, click on the “Claim this knowledge panel” link at the bottom left of the screen.

All that’s needed now is for Ms. Palin to click on the link and get behind the wheel. Here’s why she should consider it. The following image was taken from Google Search on January 14, 2020.

What is the Google personal knowledge panel?

In certain Google searches, knowledge panels (blocks of information) display prominently on the right side of the screen, at the top of the screen. They are created automatically by Google. The material is derived from the Google Knowledge Graph, which is Google’s massive collection of sources and information. You will not be able to purchase or apply for a personal knowledge panel, but you will be able to take measures to make it a reality.

Why is the Google personal knowledge panel important?

“No-brainer” is the term used to describe this situation. Suppose Google offered to display a box with your contact information and other relevant information about you on the first page of Google Search. for free. Would you take them up on the offer? You’d be an idiot if you didn’t. The PKP aids in the development of your personal brand and serves as evidence of your influence. In the case of search engine optimization, this is a beneficial development.

Why should I claim my Google PKP?

Obtaining your own personal knowledge panel is a good idea for a number of reasons, the most important of which are as follows: First and foremost, claiming it for yourself aids in the security of the panel. Do you remember the email hacking incident involving Sarah Palin? Security is a positive development. It will be significantly more difficult for a hacker or other malicious actor to claim your personal knowledge panel in your place once you have done so. Afterwards, you will have the chance to offer direct suggestions regarding content and to perform some optimization work on your PKP after you have claimed it.

Are we talking about the Google My Business panel?

No. The Google My Business panel is a sort of knowledge panel in that it provides information about your business. It is the “personal” knowledge panel that we are discussing. Businesses are highlighted on Google My Business. The personal knowledge panel emphasizes people, places, and things – organizations as well, but distinguishing between an organization and a corporation may be difficult at times. To store that information for the Knowledge Panel Field Guide (coming soon).

How do you find your Google personal knowledge panel?

First and foremost, never give up. Attempt to find yourself by looking for your name AND the skills you are renowned for. If you are Rod Collins the author, but you do not see a knowledge panel on that search, try adding additional qualifiers such as:, and so on and so forth. Listed below is something noteworthy regarding that specific search. The PKP that Google presently generates for Rod Collins is a muddled mess that includes another Rod Collins. Collins has been notified of the issue by me.

How do I claim my Google personal knowledge panel?

We touched on this topic briefly at the introduction of this post. The process begins with the discovery of your PKP, followed by the use of the “Claim this knowledge panel” link, followed by the submission of documentation to Google demonstrating that you are the person the knowledge panel is about, and finally the participation in helping Google optimize the knowledge panel.

Although the procedure appears to be time-consuming, it is actually rather simple. I’m delighted to see that Google takes security seriously as well. The Google knowledge panels are one of the most important pieces of internet real estate available today.

What if I can’t find a personal knowledge panel for myself?

Don’t be disappointed if your personalized knowledge panel does not appear. According to Google’s algorithm, the vast majority of individuals have not yet given one a rating. Here’s an example of a broad principle: It is more probable that you will notice a PKP auto-create when you search on Google the more active you are on the internet, the more spoken about you are on the internet, the more material in your name. If you don’t already have one, go to work. You should start by releasing a book on Amazon, which I would recommend you to do.

How do I optimize my Google personal knowledge panel?

The process of optimization is divided into two stages. First and foremost, double-check that Google has your information accurately (refer back to the Rod Collins case above). Next, check to see that Google has included everything that is good about you, including the names of your books, prizes you’ve gotten, movies you’ve appeared in, relevant websites, and so on. Again, more information will be included in the Field Guide after the research and case studies have been completed. That’s all there is to it for now.

What Is a Google Knowledge Panel and How To Get One

Have you ever watched a movie and immediately went to Google to look for additional information about the actor who played the lead role? You notice a panel on the right-hand side of the SERP that has a brief biography of the performer, as well as extra links and resources? That’s what I’m talking about. That’s what a knowledge panel looks like. In this article, I will present an in-depth overview of knowledge panels, including a definition of what they are, what they are used for, how important they are, and how to obtain one.

  1. That fact is established by the use of an algorithm.
  2. Knowledge panels are fairly easy to notice on a computer’s desktop.
  3. Please keep in mind that Google My Business boxes are not the same as knowledge panels.
  4. These may be located using the Google Map shown at the top of the page.
  5. Google is in the process of merging them; nevertheless, it will be a tale for the year 2022 or later.
  6. This is how Google described it in their patent: (thanks to Bill Slawski forthis article).
  7. A small aside: I use the term ‘entities’ for the rest of this section.
  8. A knowledge panel may be displayed if Google detects the presence of an entity in a user search query, according to the search engine.
  9. For this reason, we frequently see this while searching for obvious things such as movie stars or films, or musical artists: these are entities that are easy for Google to identify in the search query.

Google provides four examples of common applications in its patent. You’ll understand “where Google is coming from” when you’ve read them, and you’ll understand why they are becoming increasingly prominent on brand SERPs (read more about thathere).

  1. Provide consumers with basic factual information about a certain subject cited in a search query that has been gathered from numerous sources
  2. User navigation to numerous distinct web pages that include similar material (such as links in the knowledge panel to additional search results) should be made easier. Provide content that would otherwise have the user visiting a number of different search results and websites in order to find
  3. Allow users to receive information more quickly than they would if they had to visit each and every one of the mentioned webpages.

These four concepts are shown in great detail by the following knowledge panel:

Where Do Knowledge Panels Come From?

When Google’s algorithm is certain that it has ‘comprehended’ a fact and believes that the knowledge will be useful to the user, the search engine displays a Knowledge Panel. As previously stated, the information displayed on the screen is derived from a variety of sources. Wikipedia and Wikidata are two of the most well-known instances of crowd-sourced information. But there are many others, such as Crunchbase, LinkedIn, Facebook, Zoominfo, WordLift, and many more. The information Google collects is sorted and categorised, and if Google believes the information to be correct, it is put in its Knowledge Graph, which is accessible to everyone.

  • For most Google users, it’s now standard practice to see a knowledge panel when conducting a brand search.
  • As a result, when someone searches for your brand name on Google, the search engine must display a knowledge panel that appropriately reflects your organization.
  • This individual might be a bottom-of-the-funnel user, a customer, a business partner, or a future employee.
  • Google must have a thorough grasp of and an accurate representation of the facts about your company (or, in fact, any entity: brand, service, product, person, etc.).
  • You don’t want to take any chances with your life.

Step 1. Identify the entity home

Determine the location of what I refer to as the ‘entity home.’ In Google’s opinion, this is the webpage where the entity may be found ‘living’. This is the place to go for information about the organization. It can be any page, as long as it is solely dedicated to the company’s products and services. Pages that cover numerous entities should never be used as the home page for a single entity. The option: if you execute steps two and three, you have the option of choose which page Google considers to be the entity home.

Google prefers it if it is on a website that you own.

This is because you want to maintain the homepage as visually appealing as possible for users, and you’ll understand why this can be in contradiction with that goal when you read step two.

Number Two: Without an entity home under your direct control, your knowledge panel will always be sluggish, prone to mistakes, and at risk of disappearing (see below).

Step 2. Set out the facts

To make Google comprehend the facts you want Google to know about your entity, write a concise description that includes numerous parts (one for each component) and headers that are useful and factual. Each section should have a single heading that is helpful and factual. Utilize Organization Schema.org markup to transmit the same information in Google’s ‘native language,’ which is HTML. Nothing more than repeating what you’ve said on the website in a manner that Google can understand natively.

Step 3. Corroborate

Step two’s schema.org markup should include connections to articles about your firm that are written by sources that Google is likely to see as reliable. Nothing more than identifying them and, to the greatest extent feasible, updating all of the facts and information on those sites so that they support what you state on the entity’s main page is required. Try to use the same (or a very similar) description on each one, if at all feasible. “But that’s duplicate material, and duplicate content is bad,” says one of the most typical rebuttals.

  • The importance of consistency cannot be overstated.
  • Improve upon this by linking back to the entity’s home page from every source.
  • Just like that, you’re done!
  • If your firm has a Wikipedia page, it will very probably result in the appearance of a knowledge panel for your company.
  1. The technique is often laborious and time-consuming
  2. Nonetheless, Not all businesses ‘deserve’ to be included on Wikipedia, and many are turned down, resulting in time spent there being wasted
  3. If you are successful in getting that piece published on Wikipedia and your approach is entirely focused on Wikipedia, you are on shaky footing. It is virtually guaranteed that the knowledge panel will disappear if the Wiki administrators remove the page during the first year of its existence. Your company’s facts are being handed over to a third-party website that you do not control, and if the information is incorrect, you will have a problem on your hands. More information may be found about this on my podcast. If you have a Wikipedia article, the first sentence of the description that Google uses on your knowledge panel will be the one from that article. You have made it highly visible to your viewers and presented it as trustworthy information – the hazards are immediately clear. Google will use a description from another site that it trusts if there is no Wikipedia page available.

My author profile on Search Engine Journal has been copied and pasted here, which I can change myself. Don’t rely on either Wikipedia or Wikidata for your information. In and of themselves, they are insufficient to establish a reliable knowledge panel, and each has hazards. Having your post or item removed sends a very bad signal to Google, which will penalize you severely. I’ve been able to create well over 100 knowledge panels without the need of either Wiki or wiki software. They are stable and solid, and (most importantly) I have a high degree of control over them.

  • Within a few days of publishing a Wikipedia article, within a few weeks of publishing a well-constructed Wikidata item, and within a few months of not having either Wiki.
  • A strong knowledge panel gathers information from a variety of sources (such as the Google patent cited above) and has a big number of corroborating sources for that information as well.
  • The simple rule is to avoid putting all of your eggs in one (or even two or three) baskets at the same time.
  • In addition, this is your sole opportunity to exert any kind of control over the information displayed.
  • If you want to track your brand name, you may utilize Semrush by include it in your keyword tracking campaign.
  • Here’s a brief tip: This is possible with the Keyword Magic Tool, which is part of Semrush.

Here’s an example of a workflow to guide you: Within Keyword Manager, as seen in the picture above, you can add keywords to keyword groups and track a variety of metrics, however SERP Features will be the most useful for you to keep track of for your knowledge panel, as will be discussed later.

After that, you may download the list of pages that rank and store them in a spreadsheet for further reference.

Utilize Backlink GaporBacklink Analytics in Semrush to identify areas where you may add more corroboration sources by repeating the same procedure on your rivals and looking at their link profile using the Backlink GaporBacklink Analytics in Semrush.

In order to better serve my clients (and 500+ knowledge panel experiments), I developed an automated procedure, which I have now packaged as a SaaS platform (Kalicube Pro).

This tool also helps you identify and monitor lost opportunities in your business, allowing you to develop a robust, accurate, and insightful knowledge panel for your company. There are two alternatives.

Option 1. Google recognizes the entity home

It is possible to claim this knowledge panel if Google has recognized your entity home (which can be seen by the globe icon on the knowledge panel) and you are the recognized owner of the domain (property) in Search Console. If this is the case, when you click on “claim this knowledge panel,” you will be prompted to log into Search Console and claim the knowledge panel. There is a relatively new option available to you (as of early 2021). Google recently included Twitter and YouTube as other methods of claiming your knowledge panel, and it occasionally (but not always) provides those as choices to claim your panel.

  1. The social channel option has never appeared to me in a situation where there is no entity home; yet, it appears that the two are intertwined.
  2. Because of this mechanism, if Google makes a mistake in determining the entity home, someone else may be able to claim your knowledge panel.
  3. You must establish both your identity and the reasons why your relationship with the entity (business, person, etc.) should entitle you to control of their information panel.
  4. You must supply your government-issued identification, a selfie with your identification, confirmation of your legal link to the organization, and screenshots of logged-in social media accounts that have been verified.

Reason 1. Knowledge Graph update

When Google changes the Knowledge Graph (learn more about it here), there is a reorganization of the material that it considers as factual, and as a result, there is a reorganization of the knowledge panels. If your entity does not have adequate corroboration, these frequent modifications to the Knowledge Graph can be extremely damaging to your entity’s reputation. Google will destroy a huge amount of Knowledge Graph articles and knowledge panels with each upgrade. At Kalicube, we keep track of these changes, and you can view the most recent ones here.

Reason 2. Lost entity home

Whatever the case, whether Google has formally acknowledged the entity home by displaying the globe icon in the knowledge panel or not, the search engine does have a “foundation” source it is relying on as a “crutch” (Wikipedia, Twitter, LinkedIn, or your website are all candidates here). If it loses that reference for whatever reason, it will frequently just remove the knowledge panel, even in the interim between the significant updates described above. Consider the following scenario: If Google depended on your Wikipedia article or Wikidata item, and that page or item was removed, you would lose access to the knowledge panel.

Alternatively, if your ‘About Us’ page is no longer visible. It might also happen if Google was relying on your Twitter account and you decided to delete it.

Reason 3. Human intervention

It appears that Google personnel will occasionally erase knowledge panels after they have been claimed by a user. So far, I’ve uncovered three possible explanations: the Google employee believes it is untrue, it is a duplicate, or it is spam. That final point, in particular, stood out to me. There is a very common thread in knowledge panels that disappear when they are claimed: the knowledge panels were triggered by what I refer to as ‘knowledge panel spam,’ which is a type of spam that targets knowledge panels.

Obviously, there are others, but the general rule is that “if you pay for anything and it is quick and easy, it is most likely spam.” Multiple opinions indicate that establishing a knowledge panel for your firm is a “must.”

  1. They help you appear credible to your target audience when they search for your brand name and find your Brand SERP. In entity-based search engine results pages (SERPs), you can appear in features such as carousels, entity boxes, and People Also Search For (perhaps on your rivals’ branded searches)
  2. Google has recognized you and your business by displaying a knowledge panel on your website. As a result, you will not be left behind in the realm of entity-based search (for more more on this, see Dave Davies’ blog post here).

If you complete the work necessary to obtain your knowledge panel in a thorough and accurate manner, you will receive the following substantial benefits:

  1. When communicating with your audience across all media, you provide an uniform brand image. Because you’ll be submitting them to all of these reputable sources, you’ll receive high-quality, relevant inbound connections to your website. You will unavoidably increase Google’s impression of your E-A-T credentials (see here for additional information)
  2. You obtain an overview of your internet reputation (you may generate an ORM report by extending the spreadsheet exercise described in this article).
