The SEO Over Optimization Trap (And How To Avoid It)
Google put an end to what I refer to as “The Old SEO” a number of years ago. This included any method of SEO that did not genuinely add VALUE to your website or the Internet as a whole, such as link building. Above all else, Google is concerned with one thing only: providing its consumers with an excellent Google Search experience. When “Old School SEO” practices began to degrade the search experience, Google responded by slapping them in the face. So, what do you do if you’ve already fallen victim to the Over Optimization trap and need to escape?
Here are some of my suggestions.
What Is Over Optimization?
You must first understand what Over Optimization is in order to prevent it, which we will cover later in this article. For the sake of this definition, SEO Over Optimization refers to any sort of SEO that does not first and foremost deliver value and advantage to your website’s visitors. To put it simply, this refers to any changes you make to your website that do not immediately help your users. Due to the broad nature of the term “grey area,” we must discuss a few issues that may fall anywhere in the middle of the spectrum.
The use of a powerful platform such as WordPress is an excellent example of how to optimize your website.
Knowing the difference between “optimizing” (which is good) and “over optimizing” (which is bad) is essential to understanding and detecting Over Optimization (bad).
However, the majority of the time, you can readily identify Over Optimization by just asking yourself whether or not what you’re doing is truly beneficial to your website visitors. Explore some particular measures to take (and not to take) in this regard.
Setup Google Webmaster Tools
If you haven’t done, the very first thing you should do is set up Google Webmaster Tools on your website. If you have engaged in unethical SEO tactics in the past, you certainly must perform this test to see whether or not your website has been punished by Google. Blogging is a fantastic method to add significant value to your website without having to over optimize it. Despite the fact that you can optimize your blog entries (and in fact, you should), you should avoid over-optimization like the plague.
It is never a good idea to write blog entries that are overstuffed with keywords or that lack relevant information.
If you’ve been guilty of a lot of Over Optimization in the past, the process may take much longer.
The Social Cure
An other method of increasing the value of your website and overall Web Marketing plan is through the use of social media marketing. I constantly say, “Social media is the new link building.” I believe this to be true. Do not interpret this in the wrong manner, though. I do not mean that you should abuse social media by purchasing fans and phony followers, or creating a flurry of fictitious activity in order to gain attention. The objective of your social media marketing should be to build real fans and followers who will assist you in spreading the word about your content.
