Even if they gain immediate fame, the public’s interest in them wanes as soon as the following series is released.

All of these elements must be ‘on brand’ for the niche you’ve defined, including the right people, the right style, the right sound, and BRILLIANT content. It is not enough to be ‘good enough’; exceptional performance is required.

3. Buy a Domain and Hosting

Purchase a domain name for your band’s website (we recommend Namecheap because it is inexpensive! ), and then purchase hosting for it. UseHostgator. I know you have a lot of options, but trust me when I say that this works quite well and that I have never had an issue with it.

4. Build a Band Website

Use WordPress, which is hosted on your own domain (rather than at wordpress.com), and which has been downloaded from wordpress.org. Thrive Themes is the theme that I personally use on all of my websites, for a variety of reasons that I won’t go into in this article. It is fantastic, and it is highly focused on converting visitors (fan email sign ups or sales). While it is aesthetically pleasing, it falls a little short of the ultra-sharp look that many artists aspire to. If that’s your thing, seek for any Theme that comes withVisual Composer and install it on your computer (itself an add-on plug-in within themes).

Even if it isn’t, you may purchase it as a plug-in and include it into your existing Theme installation.

In any seriousness, there are several YouTube tutorials that will guide you through the process, and if you get stuck, locate someone at your school, institution, or even on Upwork to do the task for you.

5. Build a Fan Mailing List

Create a fan list with the help of professional email software.

You can make use of Fanbridge; it is reliable. However, if you are serious about growing your business, there is just one option: Aweber. It will outperform any competitor mailing list software, and it will serve you for the rest of your professional life.

6. Trade Free Music for Email

Create a high-quality profile or page (and engage with others – don’t ignore any of them) on social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. This is the very minimum, and with your website, you must have what we term the ‘Holy Fivinity’ – the five elements you must have online in order to be considered legitimate. There are a variety of different platforms that you may want to consider adding based on the type of music you compose and the demographic that you’re trying to reach, like SoundCloud, Mixcloud, Snapchat, bandcamp, and other similar services.

Rather than simply talking about yourself and your music, you should be writing about topics that are relevant to the people in your niche.

Oh, and you may, of course, publish about yourself, your music, your creative process, and your live events – as long as they are not commercial in nature.

9. Shoot LOADS of Video of Your Band.

Writing, rehearsing, performing, and hanging out in the van are all things I like doing. It doesn’t make a difference. You should send out emails to your mailing list at least once a week, encouraging people to look at something you have put elsewhere online. DO NOT just send them an email the week before a concert asking them to attend. Keep in touch with new information on a regular basis. Put those videos on your YouTube channel and in other places where people will see them. Facebook and Instagram are obviously quite strong in the video department these days, and certain video performs better when posted as native video to these platforms rather than as a YouTube video embedded on Facebook or Instagram.

People like seeing artists in action on film doing what they do in their professional lives as musicians – practicing, writing, traveling, and so on.

10. Be Always On

Post on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram on a regular basis. Not just any old nonsense, but information that your audience will be interested in. And.things that help to broaden the scope of your tale. Things you know your demographic will enjoy – for example, music by other bands in your genre is a good place to start, but you should also include material that appeals to their other interests.

11. Be Your Own PR

Develop a healthy interest in music-related websites and blogs. Find bloggers that could be interested in supporting you and begin to establish a relationship with them. When you have new stuff to promote, this is an important method of getting your brand out there. But don’t limit yourself to only music blogs. Try local and regional sites that have some type of music section, and then look beyond the box to see if there are any other locations where your article may fit. If you’re a one-man prog rock act who also happens to be a builder ‘in real life,’ seek find a website that publishes articles on builders and submit your tale to them.

To be sure, I can and will touch on many of those things and go into greater depth another day – for example, how do you go from this point to selling albums, how do you advance to a higher level, and so on. However, for the time being, this is unimportant. The fact is that you MUST establish an audience in order to get started and achieve anything – whether it be DIY and Direct-to-Fan success or the goal of signing a major label record deal.
