A Beginner’s Guide to Learning Power BI the Right Way [2022 Edition]
Analytics is a scorchingly hot topic right now, which is hardly unexpected given that we live in an era driven by data and information. Analytics is concerned with the discovery, interpretation, and processing of data. The problem is that data and business analysts have an overwhelming number of tools to select from, and it can be difficult to determine which is the best match for any project or task. Power BI, a business intelligence tool developed by Microsoft, will be the topic of today’s discussion, which will contribute to making that decision a little bit simpler.
Let’s get started with the fundamentals of Power BI before moving on to how to learn Power BI effectively. With the Power BI Certification Training Course, you will have a thorough understanding of the Power BI commands, functionalities, and other concepts. Now is the time to enroll!
What is Power BI?
When seeking for an answer to the question “What is Power BI?” we don’t have to look much farther than the company that created the technology, Microsoft. Power BI, according to the business, is “.a combination of software services, applications, and connections that work together to transform your disparate sources of data into coherent, visually engaging, and interactive insights.” Business intelligence (BI) is an acronym that refers to a tool that provides non-technical users with all of the tools they need to gather, display, analyze, and exchange information.
Today’s business community considers Power BI to be one of the most effective drag-and-drop solutions available in the market.
Business intelligence, according to CIO, “.utilizes software and services to turn data into actionable insights that guide an organization’s strategic and tactical business choices.” To give users with precise and thorough knowledge about the company’s status, the tools retrieve and analyze important data before presenting results in the form of charts, reports, graphs, summaries, maps, and dashboards, among other formats.
For the sake of this article, business intelligence is defined as the use of tools to transform raw data into intelligent plans and activities that may be beneficial to a company on a variety of levels.
In order to learn more about business intelligence, there are a plethora ofbusiness intelligence courses to pick from.
What is DAX in Power BI? What is it Used For?
As you begin to learn about Power BI, you will almost certainly come across the phrase “DAX.” It is an abbreviation for “Data Analysis Expressions,” and it refers to a set of constants, functions, and operators developed by Microsoft and utilized in a number of business intelligence and data visualization software applications. Because the whole code is contained within the functions, DAX is often referred to as a function language. Dealing with relational data and conducting dynamic aggregation is made possible through the use of DAX, which allows you to define the specific calculations that will be used in calculated fields and calculated columns, as well as working with calculated fields and calculated columns.
Some of the functions used by DAX are the same as those used by Excel, so if you are familiar with the latter, you may find DAX to be more intuitive to use.
It is important to note that, while DAX provides your data models with increased power and flexibility, it also runs the danger of making them too complicated.
Also, because DAX has a steep learning curve, you should be certain that you want to work with it before committing to it. After that, let us proceed to master Power BI by fully comprehending its enormous potential.

Note: As of November 2020, the following will be in effect:
- Microsoft Dataverse has replaced the Common Data Service as the company’s primary data warehouse. Find out more
- Some terminology in Microsoft Dataverse has been modified to reflect the latest developments. For example, entity is now a table, and field is now a column of the table. Find out more
This page will be updated in the near future to include the most up-to-date terms. Dynamics 365 Marketing has a comprehensive set of built-in metrics that can be found across the platform. Power BI, on the other hand, allows you to develop your own bespoke analytics and reports from your Dynamics 365 Marketing data. As well as downloadable Power BI templates that you can open in Power BI Desktop and customize to your specific needs, we also provide endpoints for connecting Power BI to Dynamics 365 Marketing.
When you’re through configuring Power BI, you may publish and distribute your report by utilizing the usual Power BI web capabilities available.
Data sources for custom analytics
Connecting two distinct types of data sources, each of which gives a different sort of information, allows you to develop unique analytics:
- Profile data is kept in the organizational database and contains the entities and records that you see, modify, and create while working directly in Dynamics 365 Marketing. Profile data is a collection of information about a person. Contacts, accounts, leads, events, customer journeys, and other common entities are included in this category. In order to access this sort of data, you’ll need the Power BI data connection known as “Common Data Services for Apps.” When a contact interacts with your marketing initiatives, the marketing-insights service database stores information about how the contact interacted with your marketing initiatives. This information includes email open rates and click rates as well as event registrations and page submissions, among other things. When you look at the insights integrated into Dynamics 365 Marketing, you can see this sort of information, but you are unable to generate or access these records directly. For this sort of data, you’ll utilize the Power BI “Azure Blob Storage” connection, which is included in the current release. In future updates, you’ll be able to make advantage of the dataflow connection as well.
If you are working with Dynamics 365 Marketing, profile data is saved in the organizational database. This data includes the entities and records that you see, modify, and create while you are working directly in Dynamics 365 Marketing. Contacts, accounts, leads, events, customer journeys, and other common entities are included in this category. In order to access this sort of information, you’ll need the Power BI data connection known as “Common Data Services for Apps.” This information is maintained in the marketing-insights service database and contains information about how your contacts participated with your marketing campaigns, such as emails opened and clicked, event registrations, page submissions, and other actions taken by your contacts.
When you look at the insights included into Dynamics 365 Marketing, you can see this sort of information, but you are unable to create or access the records themselves.
Using the dataflow connection will become available in future editions as well.
Set up Azure Blob storage and connect it to Marketing
Important As of November 2021, the naming conventions for blobs and the mechanism for updating data have been modified. Previously, exporting Marketing insights resulted in the creation of a new blob file for each new batch of interactions that came. Each batch had a single or a few exchanges, depending on the situation. The file name was a randomly created GUID, which prevented it from being confused with any other files and from being interpreted. Once the blob had been generated, it was never modified again.
- Updates to the Marketing insights export procedure include the addition of interaction batches to recent dumps.
- In the next steps, the blob name changes to enable the system to locate the most recent blob to attach, but the naming should be treated as random and not be understood in the same way as it was previously.
- All Power BI reports (both out-of-the-box and customized) should continue to function normally.
- If you need additional information or want to revert the export feature back to its old non-optimized configuration, please contact customer service.
If your storage is overburdened with blobs from prior exports, you should resync the insights data from the beginning to avoid confusion. To resynchronize the data, do the following:
- Using the setup in the Marketing app, you may halt an ongoing export. Delete the container containing the data from previous exchanges. Create a new container and begin a fresh export in the same manner as before
- Log into the portal.azure.com website. use the same account that you are already using for Dynamics 365 Marketing
- If you don’t already have one, establish a general-purpose storage account in the Azure Blob storage as outlined inQuickstart: Azure Blob Storage Accounts. Blobs may be uploaded, downloaded, and listed via the Azure site. Note V1 and V2 are the two possible names for your general-purpose storage account. We recommend utilizing V2 if at all feasible because it will enable more advanced Power BI features in the future. Both will operate with the Power BI template provided by Microsoft. Create a blob storage container in your storage account, as outlined inQuickstart: Creating a Blob Storage Container. Using the Azure interface, you may upload, download, and list blobs. Install and run the Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer, which is a desktop application, and sign in with your Azure credentials. If you don’t already have it, you may get it for free from the following websites: To access the blob storage container you just created, go down to it in the Storage Explorer. Select Get shared access signature from the context menu when you right-click on your blob storage container. The Shared Access Signaturedialog appears on the screen. Make the following modifications:
- Select a Start time and an End time to define the time period during which your signature will be valid. Note that the signature must remain valid for the whole time period in which the export is intended to run
- Otherwise the export will be stopped immediately when it expires. Select the check boxes next to each of the four permissions to enable them.
To generate the signature, selectCreate from the drop-down menu. The URL and query strings are displayed in the dialog box when it has been refreshed. You can copy and paste the URL provided here into a temporary text file so that you can use it later in this operation by selecting theCopybutton. SelectSettings from the navigation bar in Dynamics 365 Marketing. Configuration options for advanced users Marketing configurationsAnalytics configurations for marketing. A list of marketing analytics setups is displayed on the screen.
TheMarketing analytics configuration page is displayed on the screen.
- Name: Provide a name for this configuration record so that it can be identified later. Export to a blob storage location sas identifier: To complete this operation, paste the URL that you copied before. Exporting data from the following date: Optional. When this field is left blank, the Marketing program will export all interactions that are currently accessible. If a date value is supplied, then only the interactions that occurred after that date will be exported from the database. If you are not interested in providing reports for older encounters, this is a great feature for decreasing the quantity of data that is exported.
Note Parallel exports are not supported; only one export configuration is allowed per export configuration setting. Make a backup of your configuration. Note The URL you put here consists of two parts: a storage URL that identifies your storage account and container name, and an SAS token that allows Dynamics 365 Marketing to connect to your blob storage. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]. Only the storage URL will be maintained in the Dynamics 365 database in order to prevent other individuals from being able to connect to your blob storage.
- As a result, you will never be able to view the entire URL in this manner.
- This process will take a short time.
- Note Interactions are exported in real time, but only for the duration of the SAS token that has been given.
- The export that has previously been halted will be automatically resumed.
- Alternatively, if you need to export to a different storage account and container, you may halt the current export and erase the settings before creating a new one.
