Steve Krug, in his ever-popular book Don’t Make Me Think, presents a succinct definition of usability that is easy to remember: It basically just means making sure that anything works properly: that a person of average skill and experience can use the thing—whether it’s a website, a toaster, or a revolving door—for the purpose for which it was designed without becoming completely dissatisfied. The definitions of usability have some similar themes. There are two definitions that are quite common.
According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), usability is the extent to which a product can be used by defined users to achieve given goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use.
A valuable method for evaluating the success of nearly any product is the use of user experience and usability metrics.
Doesn’t it sound straightforward? In the end, it’s actually rather simple—as long as you’re paying attention to the proper signals and assessing the correct metrics. Before we get started with the list, let’s take a brief look at some of the most typical UX measuring mistakes that people make.
Typical mistakes when collecting UX metrics
Marketing managers have a tendency to obsess over numbers. They, on the other hand, hardly give their numbers a second consideration. Do you truly understand the significance of a visitor to your website? Is it possible to assign a number to a visitor even if that individual does not make a purchase? More tracking will not be beneficial if you are merely adding new data points and not contributing more decision-influencing information.
2.Lack of reliable data
Instead of obsessing on data, you should consider the larger picture and how the entire system (website, customer service, sales, management, and so on) functions. As a thorough investigation demonstrated, bad marketing data is pervasive, and the present situation hasn’t significantly changed. According to the findings of the study:
- Just because tests appear to be conclusive does not imply that they are. Testing should take into account three additional validity concerns beyond sample size: the history effect, instrumentation impact, and selection effect, among other things.
3.Lack of context for metrics
Unless you have a site with a lot of substance, the amount of monthly visits isn’t going to provide you much information. Investigate further to see how visitors connect with your website on a more personal level. If so, do they leave comments? Do they simply click on products or do they place them in their shopping cart? What if I told you I wanted something entirely different? To discover out, run some user testing.
Marketing metrics vs. user experience metrics

While there is some overlap, many of the terms are highly different, and several are virtually the same but have a different connotation. Please do not misunderstand me. In terms of marketing analytics, there is nothing to dislike. Both user experience (UX) and marketing metrics may be used to assess the performance of your company, either directly or indirectly. Traditional metrics, on the other hand, are turned on their heads when it comes to gauging user experience.
Finalizing the user experience of your website will have direct ramifications for other parts of your business, as well as for the overall success of your company.
Why is it that, as marketing managers, we tend to focus on numbers while overlooking other important aspects of our jobs, such as customer service performance? This statistic is very straightforward to assess, albeit it does need effective communication across departments. 2. Online vs. office visits
The workload of other communication channels should be reduced as a result of your website. In the case of a company that primarily sells items online, dealing with client complaints and queries in an office setting may be extremely irritating (for example, it is far simpler to resolve customer complaints online than it is to deal with irate consumers in person). People should be able to discover answers as quickly as feasible through your website. It is your in-person support personnel who will face the brunt of those online deficiencies if it is hard to locate a solution to a question in a timely manner.
The most important sign of effective information architecture is the use of good forms. In an ideal world, they’d be straightforward, simple to comprehend, and user-friendly, needing just the bare necessities. Here are some instances of poor etiquette to get you started. Forms that are not user-friendly are conversion killers. Form analytics can quickly assess how long it takes visitors to complete a form, as well as detect where they are losing interest in the form along the process. 4. How is the “back” button used?
How frequently does the “back” button get pressed? And when is this going to happen? If you want to see how users are navigating your site, use Google Analytics (or a program like Visual Website Optimizer). The odds are that your website’s design is flawed if customers click on it several times in locations where it makes no sense to them. If visitors are not encouraged to continue forward (or are unable to do so), determine what is preventing them from doing so. In many situations, the use of the back button is totally acceptable.
Surprisingly, there are a lot of surprises.
5. How is pagination deployed?
Website owners have acquired a bad habit of authoring long, paginated pieces and dividing material into chunks in order to increase pageviews, which frequently frustrates the living daylights out of their users. Check your website analytics to discover whether clients abandon a shopping cart after seeing the first and second pages of a certain content. From the sense of usability, there is no reason to have slideshows on a website when the material can be accessed by scrolling.
Particularly guilty of this practice are media websites, however some do at least offer the reader the choice of seeing all material on a single page, which is preferable to others. If you have paginated material, make sure that there is an option to see everything on a single page, if possible.
6. Navigation vs. search
What is the user experience like on your website? Mouse tracking, or the usage of Google Identify Manager to tag specific links, may show you where people are clicking on a page, or if they are utilizing the site search feature instead. The ratio of navigation to search reveals which pages are simple (or difficult) for users to locate on your website.
7. Visitors who purchased vs. visitors who quit the process
One of the most important measures of whether the modifications have had any effect is the number of purchases made when compared to the number of purchases made by customers who elected to keep their credit cards in their wallets. This is the pinnacle of conversion rating performance.
8. Random visitors vs. visitors who bought something
Unless you’re ready to delve further into the specifics, the quantity of visits will tell you nothing about the situation. The sheer volume of sales created should be your primary concern, unless your company is primarily concerned with content marketing and advertising campaigns. - Don’t get trapped in a rut with your internet marketing since conversions alone aren’t the complete picture. Test, test, and more testing (including A/B, multivariate, and user tests). Do not believe that user experience (UX) is something that can be completed once
- Rather, it is a continuous process of improvement. Less measurement, more interpretation
- Ratios are preferred over single measurements

What metrics and KPIs do the experts use to measure UX effectiveness?
In the field of user experience (UX), metrics are a collection of numerical data points that are used to measure, compare, and track the user experience of a website or app over time. They play a critical role in ensuring that UX design decisions are made and assessed on the basis of fair evidence rather than subjective judgments. KPIs (key performance indicators) are measures of how well your company is performing in relation to its overall goals – such as revenue growth, customer retention, or rising user numbers.

How to take the invisible and make it measurable

Why do we need to measure UX?
It’s all well and well for us to sit about in our ivory towers crying out the window about how fantastic user experience research is, but this will only get us so far. Sometimes some of those individuals glance up and shout back, “Yeah, I understand! ” It’s merely plain sense to base design decisions on actual human behavior,” they say, but then they add the following caveat: “But then there’s the caveat that. “However, how are we going to quantify that?” If we do usability testing and make a modification to a website that, based on our findings, supposedly enhances the user experience, how do we know that the change was successful?
“How do we demonstrate to our superiors that the investment was worthwhile?” The point at which we begin to shutter the window and murmur something like “having to keep it shut because of the air-conditioning, sorry I can’t hear you” usually occurs around the metric conversion point.
When it comes to quantifying the success, failure, or shrugging indifference of your user experience, metrics have always been a tricky topic to broach. Every other discipline has it all figured out!
- You want to know how well your blog article performed, so you do the following: Analyze your traffic, see how long people are spending on your website, note how many times it has been shared, and evaluate the amount and quality of comments
- You wish to track the performance of your social media channels: Take a look at the number of followers you have. Is there any progress? Are they influential in your field of expertise? Do they have anything to say? Do they cooperate? Is it absolutely possible that these are bots? You want to know how much of a difference the adjustments in the arrangement of the categories in your main menu have made: You’re right, it does appear to be better to you! Have you conducted any more usability testing to see whether or not people are still having difficulty with it? There is a possibility that traffic from the homepage to certain categories has increased, but there is no guarantee that this is as a result of the adjustments. You want to know how good your Bakewell Tart is, so you do the following: Is it possible that I ate the entire darn thing? Most likely, but that does not speak to the quality of the work. With the same ease with which I take a breath, I can devour an entire Bakewell Tart in one sitting. Did I say that I wanted you to create me another one? Yes! That’s what I call a high-quality Bakewell Tart.
As we all know, data only reveals a portion of the whole picture. Google Analytics can tell you what’s going on, but it can’t tell you why it’s going on. In the absence of further data, you’re effectively guessing at what will happen. Though an educated and well informed estimate is possible, you won’t know for certain why things are occurring on your site until you witness real people using it for themselves. However, measuring user experience does not have to be an ethereal mystery. As you’ll see in the section below, there are several methods to demonstrate the importance of user experience research.
What’s the difference between behavioral and attitudinal UX metrics?
We work with a variety of organizations in a variety of sectors and have discovered that certain indicators are most frequently utilized for benchmarking purposes (either over a period of time or compared against competitors). The following are the two major groups that we have divided them into:
Behavior (what they do)
In the field of user research, it is vital to understand what people are doing and how they are interacting with your goods and services. This information is gathered through the use of task-based usability assessment, which is widely used throughout the industry. No, we are not referring to only “in-lab” think aloud experiments, but also distant moderated studies, which will allow you to obtain bigger sample numbers in a more efficient manner. The following are examples of task-level behavioral measures that you might want to collect:
- Amount of time spent on site
- Problems and frustrations
- Success rate of task
- Time spent on task
Attitude (what they say)
How people feel, what they say before, during, and after using a product, and how this influences their opinion of the brand are all important considerations. You might wish to gather the following attitudes measurements in order to measure this:
- Loyalty (as measured by scores such as SUS or NPS — more on these metrics later)
- And Usability (or the ease with which something may be used)
- A sense of credibility (which takes into account factors such as trust, worth, and consideration)
- Aspects of one’s appearance (“oooooh lovely!” or “OW MY EYES!”, for example)
But how can one quantify one’s own opinion? To take these “oooooh lovely” or “OW MY EARS!” hot takes and put it into a straightforward score that any busy CEO can comprehend, you need to break them down. Let’s take a closer look at each of these separate indicators, and we’ll see how they may be combined to provide a more comprehensive picture. Behavioural UX metrics
Simply put, how many customers have visited your online retail business, added a number of items to their shopping cart, and then abandoned their cart without purchasing anything? IKEA customers would be put through a treacherous assault course if they behaved like this. The abandonment rate is defined as the ratio of the number of abandoned shopping carts to the number of transactions that have been begun by the customer.
AOV: Average Order Value
AOV is an abbreviation for average order value, and it is calculated by dividing your total income by the number of checkouts.
“This is a clear sign of what’s going on in the profitability department,” according to VWO. If your UX efforts directly contribute to increased cross-selling and upselling, then AOV might be a good measure of whether or not you’ve made progress.
If there is a specific thing that has been caused by a UX enhancement, this is quite useful. Consider the completion of an online form, the signing up for a newsletter, or the fulfillment of any other job. It is possible to be *fairly* confident that you had an impact if the site modification directly influences how many people are converting in that exact job, and you can quantify that reliably. Just keep in mind that having a larger conversion count may also be a result of marketing efforts, so be careful to track the conversion rate (usually defined as the number of sales divided by the number of visits) to be sure.
Keep in mind that not all visits to your website have the potential to convert, and that conversion rates might vary dramatically depending on the type of visitor.
The number of page views and clicks on a website is a standard measure. For mobile applications, or even online applications, or even single-page web applications, it is possible to monitor a mix of clicks, taps, the number of screens or the number of steps. If you are doing an in-lab research, keeping track of these might be highly time-consuming. However, if you are utilizing an auser research platform like as ours, the majority of these indicators are recorded automatically, which greatly reduces the amount of time spent on analysis and reporting.
These can be measured in terms of the number of distinct problems discovered and/or the number (or percentage) of participants who experience a particular difficulty. We advocate doing Think-Out-Loud research to identify difficulties, followed by a large-sample study to determine the percentage of problems faced by a broad population as a result of the problems identified (with confidence intervals). When collecting Behavioral KPIs, the majority of them are done so “per job” and then combined to form an average for a certain research and/or digital product.
Our single user experience metric resulted in a score of
A realistic set of tasks with a clear definition of task success is typically given to a group of representative users. For example, reaching a specific page in a check-out flow, finding the correct answer on a marketing website, or reaching a step in an interactive mobile app are all examples of tasks that are successful. It is vital to have a clear understanding of what constitutes success and/or failure. It is possible to achieve 80 percent task success if eight of ten users successfully complete their tasks and just two users fail to finish their tasks.
The task success rate will lie anywhere between 55 percent and 100 percent, based on our 90 percent confidence.
For the most part, this indicates that we are 90 percent certain that the Task Success Rate will fall somewhere between 72 percent and 88 percent. The margin of error is reduced in direct proportion to the sample size.
Typically, an absolute number is used. For instance, 3 minutes. When it comes to task-based research, where the user’s purpose is to complete a task as quickly as possible, task times that are shorter are more beneficial. There are certain caveats, however: if the purpose is to keep the user more engaged, such as by keeping them on Facebook’s News Feed, then longer Task Times may be preferable in some cases. It is extremely dependent on the work at hand. Even on Facebook’s News Feed, if the aim is to locate a specific event, lower task durations may result in a more favorable conclusion for the user.
Attitudinal UX metrics
It is via the use of attitude measurements that we are able to ‘quantify’ qualitative data such as physical attractiveness as well as loyalty, trust, and usability. There are a plethora of different’scores’ available on the market that will give a number to attitudinal data based on a variety of different approaches. Here’s a quick rundown of the most important ones.
CSAT: Customer Satisfaction Score
Because it does not have the rigorous question restriction limitations of NPS, you can ask anything from a single question to a full-length survey for this measure of customer satisfaction. Results are expressed as a percentage of the total. The advantage is that there is no limit to how much may be customized. A disadvantage of conducting a full-length survey is that the people who take the time to do so are only likely to either like or dislike your product.
NPS: Net Promoter Score
The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a survey that you may use at the conclusion of your user experience tests. When asked a single straight question, the Net Promoter Score (NPS) lets you determine whether or not you would suggest a certain organization, product, service, or experience to a friend or colleague. The way NPS operates is as follows:
- Promoters are those who receive a score of 9 or 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. Loyal customers who will suggest your services, goods, or brand to others and who will continue to purchase from you in the future
- Those that react with a score of 7 or 8 are referred to as ‘passive’ respondents. They are satisfied with your service, but they have no true loyalty to you, and as a result, they will most likely go
- Finally, there are the ‘detractors,’ who are consumers who gave a score between 0 and 6 out of 10. These are dissatisfied customers who do not wish to be exposed to your goods in the future.
It is then determined by subtracting the proportion of customers who are detractors from the percentage of customers who are promoters, which results in the final NPS score being generated. NPS equals the sum of promoters and detractors.
SUPR-Q: Standardized User Experience Percentile Rank Questionnaire
There are eight items in this questionnaire that are used to assess the overall quality of the online user experience, including measurements of usability, credibility, loyalty, and overall attractiveness. On the SUS: System Usability Scale website, you may find out more about SUPR-Q. Follow along as I go the entire section without mentioning how I’m going to’sort it all out.” You’ll be delighted with my accomplishments. Users are asked to answer a brief questionnaire for each website usability test that is conducted, and a score is calculated based on their responses.
- I believe that I would like using this website on a regular basis
- I believed the website was needlessly complicated
- Nonetheless, I think the website was simple to use
Because it is so simple to administer and can be used on a small sample size, this assessment offers several advantages, including the ability to clearly show whether a trait has improved or not. Keep in mind, however, that the grading method is quite sophisticated, and it will not tell you what is wrong with your website – it will just classify it according to how easy it is to use.
TPI: Task Performance Indicator
Gerry McGovern provides a detailed discussion of the mechanism his team devised to “evaluate the impact of modifications on the customer experience,” which he calls “a game changer.” Through the use of TPI, you will ask 10-12 “task questions” that are specifically generated for each of the “top tasks” that you wish to assess (these questions must be repeatable, as they will be asked once again when the test is conducted again in 6 – 12 months).
The user is supplied with a task question through live chat for each task he or she completes.
The user is next prompted to express their level of confidence in their response.
If you take another measurement in six months and find that nothing has changed, the score should result in a TPI of 40 once more.
Is there just one single UX metric that can make my life easier?
At UserZoom, we have developed our own unique user experience measure score, which we call theQXscore. As the name implies, this score is a “quality of experience” score that incorporates multiple measurements, including both behavioural data (such as task success, task time, and page views) and attitudinal data (such as ease of use, trust, and appearance). The goal is to create a single benchmarking score for your product by combining multiple measurements. This single user experience score is a straightforward, clear, and convincing approach for presenting user research findings to stakeholders, and it should aid in gaining future support.
I haven’t even scratched the surface of every potential UX measure here, because doing so would take the better part of a week. It is becoming increasingly clear to me that UXers have a diverse set of metrics to rely on, which include both user rating systems and qualitative input from usability testing. It also depends on your own company’s objectives as well as the results that your numerous stakeholders would want to achieve. The idea is to be clear about what is being assessed and why it is being measured.
